Content Design and Development

Whether you're an instructional designer or a content developer, this area is sure to have something you're looking for.

If you're new to the Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM), visit the Introduction to ADL area for some introductory resources. If you're already familiar with SCORM and are looking for a practical step-by-step process for developing SCORM content, take a look at the SCORM Best Practices Guide for Content Developers. The guide was produced by the Learning Systems Architecture Lab for content developers, instructional designers, writers, programmers, and subject matter experts tasked with creating new content that is SCORM conformant or converting existing content into SCORM conformant content. In addition, the Best Practices Guide for the Design and Development of SCORM Assessments provides helpful guidance for assessments within SCORM-conformant content.

The SCORM in Practice briefing was developed by instructional designers and software engineers at the ADL Technology Center for instructional designers and software engineers creating SCORM products. The briefing reviews SCORM fundamentals before diving into instructional design in SCORM projects. Content development practices involving the SCORM Run-Time Environment Data Model Elements and testing procedures are described with some final notes for LMS and Tool developers.

The Reload Content Package and Metadata Editor is an open source, freely available software application. It was originally developed by the Bolton Institute in the U.K. to support SCORM 1.2 content package development. The ADL Initiative updated the application to support SCORM 2004 content packaging, simple sequencing, and IEEE Learning Object Metadata. It includes working content package examples of the Sequencing Templates contained in the SCORM Best Practices Guide for Content Developers.
