OPEL is a collection of software libraries designed for JADL Prototypes working
with SCORM. These libraries provide common data and user interface services that
enable prototype efforts to focus on unique value-added research. Data services
include the ability to read and write SCORM conformant XML documents and map them
to .NET Framework class definitions. User interface services include extendable
design surfaces and a configurable user interface environment.
The OPEL libraries also provide a collection of working code that is being used
to develop the Integrated Prototype Architecture (IPA).

February CTP Released
The Joint ADL Co-Lab is pleased to announce the public availability of the February
Community Technology Preview (CTP) of the Open Platform for E-Learning (OPEL). This
release consists of an update to OPEL's embedded SCORM Run-Time Environment.
The February CTP is considered to be the Alpha 3 release. As such it should *not*
be used for production. This release is for the community to examine OPEL and the
ADL Workbench (provided as a part of the December CTP), to provide bug reports,
and comment on where you would like the project to go in the future.
This release provides:
Loading/modification/saving of the SCORM DOM
An update to the embedded SCORM Run-Time Environment (RTE)
This release does not provide:
Any guarantees not to shred your data if you try to use it on production systems.
This is an alpha!
The ability to import existing courses
The ability to import resources
The ability to modify sequencing, navigation, or metadata settings
This release is for preview purposes only! The best way to experience this release
is to open an existing piece of courseware. There are several suitable courses available
on the ADL website at http://www.adlnet.gov.
If you are a developer, you can also try building your own applications by referencing
the OPEL libraries.
December CTP Released
The Joint ADL Co-Lab is pleased to announce the public availability of the December
Community Technology Preview (CTP) of the Open Platform for E-Learning (OPEL). This
release consists of three packages:
A set of core libraries that provide a complete SCORM Document Object Model (DOM).
An embedded SCORM Run-Time Environment (RTE).
The "ADL Workbench" application.
The workbench is built on top of the core OPEL libraries and RTE, and provides a
simplified content packaging experience. The workbench is built to be extensible,
so potential future releases could include the ability to include 3rd-party modules
to perform specialized functions.
The December CTP is considered to be the Alpha 2 release. As such it should *not*
be used for production. This release is for the community to examine OPEL and the
ADL Workbench, to provide bug reports, and comment on where they would like the
projects to go in the future.
This release provides:
Loading/modification/saving of the SCORM DOM
An embedded SCORM Run-Time Environment (RTE)
A "debugging" function in the ADL Workbench that will automatically launch the embedded
RTE against the loaded course
This release does not provide:
Any guarantees not to shred your data if you try to use it on production systems.
