Designing for Reusability Workshop
(Requires separate registration from conference - no additional cost to attend)
DESCRIPTION:
This tutorial presents guidelines, techniques and best practices for enhancing the
reusability of digital resources used in training and education. It is based on
material developed by the National Science Foundation
Reusable Learning Project and work done supported by the Advanced Distributed
Learning initiative.
The tutorial will cover the basics of reusability from the perspectives of authors,
instructors, learners, and repository managers. It will emphasize how to design
and modify content so that it is more easily reused and repurposed, looking at both
structural issues (e.g. navigation, separation of presentation from content and
appropriate use of standards) and pedagogical issues (e.g. balancing contextual
dependencies with reusability and making it easy to match content with objectives).
The tutorial will also cover key aspects of managing content for reuse and repurposing,
including rights management, technical interoperability, and metadata.
This tutorial will involve group activities wherein participants explore and critique
sample content and repository structures. The tutorial will also introduce participants
to tools that can be used for reuse and repurposing. It is therefore useful to bring
a laptop with a wireless Internet connection if you have access to one.
TOPICS:
1. Different types of reuse
2. Characteristics of learning resources that increase reusability
3. Separating presentation, content, structure, context and pedagogy
4. Technical interoperability and technical interoperability standards (e.g. SCORM)
5. Practices repositories can implement to support reuse
6. Tools and resources
Intended Audience:
- Training developers, designers, authors and mangers
- Training managers
- Staff responsible for supporting training operations
Presenter Information:
The presenters will be Dr. Robby Robson
and Ms. Jennifer Brooks, Alexandria Advanced Distributed Learning Co-Laboratory.
Dr. Robson is chair of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
Learning Technology Standards Committee, was principle investigator for the National
Science Digital Library Reusable Learning project and is currently principle investigator

Focus Sessions will allow participants, new and seasoned to ADL, to gather together
in their area of interest. This year we will have four focus sessions:
- ADL – Registry
- Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM)
- Instructional Systems Design (ISD)
- ADL Acquisition Practices
Each section will have a facilitator and recorder to discuss and collect Lessons
Learned; Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs); and References. We want to hear from
you and collect your experiences, challenges, and requirements for advancing distributed

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)/Shareable
Content Object Reference Model (SCORM)-Simulation Study Group (Part I)
(Requires separate registration from conference - no additional cost to attend)
Recent years have seen huge increases both in computing power and the number of
people able to access computers and the Internet. This proliferation of information
and communication technologies has enabled higher quality learning to be made available
through increasingly sophisticated modes of presentation. Traditional or conventional
training programs use a variety of instructional development strategies to support
a student's need to master a variety of competencies. Simulations and games
are increasingly being deployed as powerful and valuable extensions to these traditional
educational initiatives.
However, learning is a comprehensive process which does not simply consist of the
transmission and learning of content. While simulations offer the opportunity to
undergo informative interactive experiences, they do not, by themselves, constitute
training or instruction. Assessment, student tracking and feedback are important
elements in the teaching and learning process.
Recognizing the importance of these requirements, two IEEE standards committees
have formed a collaborative study group to investigate the potential of formalizing
a standard set of technical specifications to allow simulations and/or games to
be launched and managed through SCORM conformant Learning Management Systems (LMS).
The IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee (LTSC) and the Simulation Interoperability
Standards Organization (SISO) invite interested parties to participate in a face
to face meeting of this study group in collaboration with the Joint ADL Co-Lab's
2006 Implementation Fest.
This meeting will focus on discussions, both technical and pedagogical, to address
the many issues associated with developing such SCORM-Simulation Interface standards.
Discussions will focus on the different use-cases for simulations and the key interface
points between simulation content and LMS environments such as delivering simulation
content to the learner, monitoring key interactions and performance within simulation
content and determining what the student should next experience within the continuum
of training.
Additional information may also be found at the SCORM-Simulation Interface Standards
study group section of the SISO website at http://www.sisostds.org/.
